Wealth held by individuals worldwide reached USD195trn in 2012
The total wealth held by the world’s individuals climbed to USD195trn at the end of 2012, according to WealthInsight.
The world’s overall number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) stood at 16.8 million in the same year; their cumulative wealth was evaluated at USD66trn.
Worldwide wealth managers, family offices and private banks managed assets worth USD19.3trn in 2012. Around USD19.3trn of these assets were kept in offshore centres (OFCs).
Over 5,000 family offices operated at the end of 2012 worldwide. Most of them were based in Europe and the US. The cumulative wealth held by the global family offices was estimated at around USD 2.5trn. The sum was equal to 3.7 per cent of the world’s total HNWI wealth and to 13 per cent of the global assets under management.
Last year, there were more than 2,900 family offices in the US alone.
