Mexico registered 77 earthquakes between Saturday (18) and Sunday (19), according to data from the National Seismological Service (SSN), linked to the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The sequence of tremors led authorities to issue alerts and reinforce guidelines to the population.
The majority of the quakes occurred on the country’s west coast, a region historically more susceptible to this kind of phenomenon due to its location on zones of interaction between tectonic plates.
According to the records, most earthquakes had magnitudes below 4, a level that generally does not cause significant damage. Still, at least five earthquakes exceeded this threshold.
Among the most recent, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded at 5:35 AM on Sunday (19), about 42 kilometers southwest of Tonalá, in the state of Chiapas. Other notable tremors occurred throughout Saturday (18) at different points across the country, including regions of Baja California and Michoacán.
Recommendations to the population
Given the frequency of the shocks, the Mexican government reinforced preventive guidelines. Among the measures are participation in drills, identifying safe areas in homes and workplaces, and adopting protocols during earthquakes.
In case of an earthquake, the recommendation is to stay calm, move away from windows and objects that could fall. For those in vehicles, the guidance is to park in open areas, far from tall structures.
After the tremor, authorities indicate checking for possible damage, using the phone only in emergencies, and paying attention to potential aftershocks. It is also recommended to avoid spreading unverified information and to follow official statements.
