Global Sanctions Must Be Expanded to Target the Russian Nuclear Sector

27 April 2026

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said this Sunday (26), during a speech at the event marking the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, that Russia transformed the nuclear facilities into an “instrument” of war. He argued that global sanctions should be expanded to also target the Russian nuclear sector and “all legal entities and individuals associated”.

For Zelensky, international pressure needs to be reinforced to curb what he called the “completely irresponsible and imprudent” force of the Russians on the issue.

Territory of War

In the remarks, broadcast by the Ukrainian leader via the social network X, he asserted that “no one could have imagined” that, decades after the Chernobyl accident, the plant and its remaining structures would be converted into “territory of war”.

He also accused Moscow of turning the Zaporizhzhia plant – which he described as the largest in Europe – into a platform for military actions. He said that Russia launches attacks from it against Ukrainian cities and villages, where it still stores weapons and ammunition.

Air Defense

By requesting more military support, the Ukrainian said it is very important to continually strengthen the country's air defense and long-range capabilities, both to protect the population and infrastructure and to increase pressure on Russia to end the war.
