Ten days after floods devastated the country, rescue teams in Nepal rescued a Chinese citizen and a woman alive, authorities said on Saturday, the 5th.
According to a post on the prime minister’s office’s social media, the man was rescued from a tunnel at a hydroelectric plant, bringing the number of workers rescued alive from the Trishuli hydropower project to three. Two Nepali workers were rescued from the plant on Friday, the 4th.
The Nepal Army said a joint rescue team, comprising Nepali soldiers and South Korean disaster experts, removed the man from a 225-meter tunnel. Footage showed the worker being rescued by helicopter, while an Army doctor checked his health during the flight.
About 900 workers are missing across 12 hydropower projects throughout Nepal, and it is believed that around 500 are trapped in different tunnels, according to authorities.
Another rescue was carried out in the town of Nuwakot, where a woman was rescued alive from a house, the Nepal Army spokesman said on Saturday. Authorities said the woman was airlifted by helicopter to Kathmandu.
Images released by the Nepal Army show rescuers finding the woman covered in mud. They gave her bottled water before safely removing her, wrapped in a blanket.
At least 1,300 people have died in the floods of August 26, which were likely caused by the collapse of a glacier, and more than five thousand remain missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency./AP
