NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (Reuters) – The president of the United States, Donald Trump, spent the start of the Labor Day holiday posting memes on social media in support of renaming the State of New Mexico to “New America,” as the tense trade talks with Mexico intensify.
Trump posted on Monday several maps of the United States in which the territorial area of New Mexico had been renamed as New America.
The president said on Sunday that he had received suggestions to change the state’s name and that he liked the idea. “Much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of this potentially incredible state. Wow, I loved it!!!”
Trump’s posts follow his decision to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America last month, after trade talks with Canada did not reach an agreement.
The federal government of the United States, however, does not have authority to rename a state.
New Mexico is currently governed by Michelle Luján Grisham, a Democrat. She has been in office since January 1, 2019 and was reelected in 2022.
The governor stated in a post on X that “the name of New Mexico is not under discussion — it has been ours even before the existence of the United States.”
