New Air Traffic Control Outage Delays UK Flights

22 September 2026

LONDON, 21 Sep (Reuters) – Flights at several British airports were delayed on Monday due to a fault in air traffic control, according to NATS, the British air traffic control company, less than two weeks after a separate issue disrupted flights across the country.

Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast airports faced delays, which, according to NATS, were related to a problem at its Prestwick Centre in Scotland, while London Gatwick and London City airports said there would be some disruption to operations.

British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, who has been evaluating the future of NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe following repeated failures, said the problem had been resolved and that the systems were returning to operation.

“I know this will be deeply frustrating for passengers after the previous problem,” she said on X.

NATS said Monday’s delays were caused by a connectivity issue “not related to the problem from two weeks ago,” when about 2,000 flights were canceled due to a software fault, affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
