A New York judge sentenced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for sexually assaulting a former production assistant in 2006, after the former cinema magnate had been found guilty at a trial last year.
Weinstein, 74, was convicted in June 2025 of a first-degree criminal sexual act for assaulting Miriam Haley in his Manhattan apartment, closing a six-year legal saga that saw his 2020 conviction overturned by the New York Court of Appeals. Weinstein denied any assault or having sexual relations without consent.
The Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, praised Haley on Wednesday for her testimony and said he was moved by her courage.
A spokesperson for Weinstein said in a statement that he maintains his innocence and vehemently disagrees with the sentence imposed by Judge Curtis Farber.
Weinstein was first convicted in New York in 2020 of assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann, sentencing him to 23 years in prison. The New York Court of Appeals overturned that conviction in 2024, concluding that he had not received a fair trial.
In a new trial, in 2025, jurors convicted him on a charge related to Haley, acquitted him of the charge of assaulting former model Kaja Sokola, and did not reach a verdict on the rape charge involving Mann.
A third trial regarding Mann’s accusation ended in another mistrial in May. Prosecutors dropped the charge the following month, after Mann said she did not want to testify at a fourth trial.
Co-founder of the Miramax studio, Weinstein was separately convicted in California in 2022 of rape and sexual assault and sentenced to 16 years. A California appellate court upheld those convictions in June but ruled that he should be resentenced because the judge had treated his New York convictions — which had already been overturned — as an aggravating factor.
Weinstein’s original conviction was a landmark for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct by powerful men.
More than 100 women, including famous actresses, accused Weinstein of inappropriate conduct. He denied the allegations.
