Russian attacks against Ukraine left at least seven dead and more than 60 injured on Monday, the 28th. The bombardments hit residential buildings, offices, data centers, and a building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In the Kyiv region, four people were killed and at least eight injured, including three children, after Russian drone attacks.
One of the victims was a woman who was at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in the Shevchenkivskyi district, in the center of the Ukrainian capital, according to the city’s military administration. The site is the latest cultural heritage site in the capital to be damaged. Gas stations and a pharmaceutical company were also hit.
In Dnipro, in southeastern Ukraine, a drone hit an office center during business hours and left at least three dead and 12 injured, according to local authorities.
In Kharkiv, in the northeast of the country, a bombardment against a nine-story residential building left 43 people injured, including 11 children, said the city mayor, Ihor Terekhov.
On Sunday, the 27th, a drone hit a residential area in the Chernihiv region, in northern Ukraine, leaving four people injured, including two teenagers, reported the head of the regional military administration, Viacheslav Chaus.
After the attacks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia “will certainly face a response for this.”
“Every act of Russian terror results in victims that could have been avoided if the pressure on Russia finally became total. Pressure on everything that finances and produces Russia’s terror weapons, and on all who use them,” Zelensky wrote in a post on X.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces hit two data centers and gas stations in Kyiv and a distribution center belonging to the Nova Poshta postal company in Odesa, in the south of the country.
According to the ministry, the Russian military also hit a cargo ship in the Black Sea and another in the Ukrainian port of Chornomorsk. The attacks aim to limit Ukraine’s grain exports, though they may also trigger food shortages in countries that depend on these imports.
Moscow said it targets only sites related to military activities, but Russian airstrikes regularly hit civilian areas.
The new attacks came after a week of diplomatic efforts at the United Nations headquarters to advance negotiations to end Moscow’s invasion, which began four and a half years ago.
The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said on Monday that the chances of a rapid progress toward a peace agreement were small after recent Ukrainian attacks, including during Russia’s parliamentary elections.
“Ukraine will have to pay a price for the actions that occurred in recent months,” Peskov told reporters. “This is happening now.”
Zelensky said that, on Sunday, long-range attacks on Russian territory hit two defense factories in Tula, south of Moscow, and Voronezh, in the southwest of the country, as well as oil facilities in the Krasnodar region in the south.
Long-range Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck Russian fuel depots and industrial facilities that are important to Moscow’s economy and war effort.
Ukrainian drone attacks during the night caused fires at three infrastructure facilities in Krasnodar, emergency authorities said on Monday, without identifying the locations.
The Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses shot down 254 Ukrainian drones during the night.
