Trade War Advances: US Moves to Block Canadian Beverage and Motorcycle Imports

30 September 2026

The United States’ ban on importing certain Canadian products went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Washington time, marking a new escalation in the trade war between the two countries.

The latest trade restrictions imposed by the Trump administration block the import of motorcycles, alcoholic beverages, and whey-derived products from Canada, in response to retaliatory tariffs imposed by the government of Prime Minister Mark Carney on some American products.

The measure represents the latest chapter in the growing trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada, historic allies that share supply chains deeply integrated along the world’s longest border. The volume of trade affected by the new prohibitions is relatively small, about $1 billion, according to calculations published this month by the economics department of the Bank of Nova Scotia. In 2025, the U.S. and Canada moved nearly $900 billion in goods and services.

In addition to the import prohibitions that took effect in the early hours, the White House imposed at the start of this month a 50% tariff on various categories of goods imported from Canada, including some types of cheese, boats, golf carts, and furniture. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs, which took effect on September 8, were a response to the Section 338 tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on August 22, after the failure of trade negotiations.

President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he expects Canadian authorities to reduce tariffs on American products and to apologize within the next three or four weeks. Carney and his ministers, for their part, have said they will not rush to close a bad deal and, in recent months, have been expanding the country’s trade relations with Europe and Asia.
