The president of the United States, Donald Trump, stated on Thursday (the 1st) that Brazil is “a very important country” and described the Brazilian presidential election as “very important,” just days ahead of the first round of the vote scheduled for this Sunday.
“I am closely following the Brazilian elections. Brazil is a very important country. It is a great country. The people of Brazil are fantastic. It is a very important election,” said Trump to reporters at the White House. The Republican, however, did not mention support for any candidate.
The statements come amid attention in Washington regarding the Brazilian race. Earlier this week, three US Democratic senators asked the Trump administration to avoid any interference in the electoral process, in a letter sent to Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
Last week, White House officials heard by Broadcast stated that it would be up to Trump himself to decide whether he would recognize the election’s result. The sources also said that the American president has a preference for a candidate by ideological affinity, but that there was, at that moment, no formal backing for any name.
On Thursday, Reuters also reported that Brazilian intelligence authorities told European representatives of alleged interference by the United States and Russia before the election. Government officials in the United States who had previously spoken to Broadcast denied interference by Washington in the Brazilian vote.
