North Korea fired an unidentified projectile toward the sea off the country’s eastern coast, the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
The launch came after Kim Yo Jong, from Pyongyang — the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un — released a statement on Friday rejecting Seoul’s demand for an apology over the North Korean mines that gravely injured South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone, a heavily fortified area between the two Koreas.
South Korea said this week that the North Korean mines caused the explosion that gravely injured two South Korean soldiers during a reconnaissance mission inside the 4-kilometer-wide border that runs across the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea has drastically intensified its hostility toward the South in recent years, renouncing reunification as a national objective and calling South Korea its “principal enemy.”
