Nobel Prize Rule Prevents Revealing This Year’s Nominees — Explained

10 October 2026

Various scientists, academics, and prominent figures have already won the Nobel Prize. The winners of 2026 were announced this week. However, the nominees for each category remain under absolute secrecy until 2076.

This happens because the names of the nominees cannot be revealed until 50 years after the award. The nomination process begins in September of the year prior to the announcement of the result, which is released in October of the following year. The final deadline for submitting a name to the prize is January 31.

The rule also protects the identity of those who nominated each candidate and other information about the nominees.

It should be noted that no one can apply for a Nobel Prize on their own. Every year, thousands of members of academies, university professors, scientists, previous laureates, members of parliamentary assemblies and others are invited to nominate candidates for the prize of the following year. These nominators are chosen to ensure the representation of as many countries and universities as possible over time.

After receiving all nominations, the Nobel Committees of the four institutions that award the prizes are responsible for selecting the candidates. All nominations are gathered into a single file, which will only be accessible to the general public 50 years later.

It should be noted that mere nomination does not mean a confirmed candidacy, nor does it indicate that the individual will win the Nobel Prize. The committees’ evaluations take place over months.

Finally, a cerimônia de entrega dos Prêmios Nobel acontece em 10 de dezembro, a date known as Nobel Day and the day on which Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize, passed away. The ceremony is held in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Oslo, Norway.

The laureates receive medals, diplomas, and the monetary prize corresponding to the award.
