EU: Kallas Calls for US Sanctions on Russia to End the War in Ukraine

12 October 2026

Kaja Kallas stated that the EU views positively the energy sector truce, “as long as it lasts”, but she stressed that it remains unclear whether Russia will comply with it.

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said on Monday, the 12th, in Luxembourg, that the bloc would ask the United States to align sanctions against Russia to increase pressure and, according to her, “to end the war” in Ukraine.

Upon arriving at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Kallas said that the EU is preparing 1,600 new additions to the sanctions list, linked to the Russian military-industrial complex and “staged elections” in Ukrainian-occupied territories.

Kallas stated that the EU views positively the truce in the energy sector, “as long as it lasts”, but stressed that it is not yet clear whether Russia will fulfill it.

According to her, protecting the energy infrastructure is crucial with winter approaching.

The high representative also cited discussions about the Middle East, including the possibility of strengthening Operation Aspides, the EU naval mission aimed at protecting commercial navigation in the Red Sea.

Kallas also said that the bloc should decide on launching a new mission in Lebanon, with civilian and military components.
