The dividend yield is a key factor for investing in the stock market for a number of investors. We have identified 4 American companies with substantial market capitalization and offering an attractive dividend yield, coupled with a stable or rising trend in their payout over the long term, and that also benefit from a positive change in their share prices over the trailing year. Indeed, the broad horizon offered by the U.S. equity market provides a notable number of stocks with regular dividends. It is not uncommon to find yields above 5% per year with monthly or quarterly payout frequency, and with good stability for many years.

Dividend: how to calculate the yield of a stock on the stock market?
Dividend yield is calculated in two ways
- If you already own the shares: dividend per share divided by your unit cost price (PRU).
- If you do not own the shares: dividend per share divided by the stock price of the share.
Example: the shares of Company A pay an annual dividend of €1.30 and the share price of Company A is €28, the dividend yield is calculated as follows:
€1.30 (annual dividend amount) / €28 (share price) = 4.64%
Now, if the investor has acquired shares of Company A at several dates in the past and at different prices, his or her brokerage account will indicate a PRU (Prix de Revient Unitaire) corresponding to the weighted average of his purchase prices plus fees.
Suppose they bought 500 shares of Company A in 2023 at a share price of €19, plus €9.50 in transaction fees. Later, in 2026, they purchase 500 more shares for €34, plus €17 in fees.
Calculation of PRU (Unit Cost Price)
Acquisition cost of the 2023 purchase: (500 shares × €19) + €9.50 fees = €9,509.50
Acquisition cost of the 2026 purchase: (500 shares × €34) + €17 fees = €17,017.00
Total cost: (€9,509.50 + €17,017.00) = €26,526.50
PRU: €26,526.50 / 1,000 (total number of shares) = €26.53 per share
In our example above, the company pays €1.30 in annual dividend. The investor’s yield is therefore 4.90% (€1.30 / €26.53).
US stock with quarterly dividend
It is customary in the United States to opt for quarterly dividend payments, whereas European companies, and French ones in particular, mostly prefer annual payments.
Indeed, across the Atlantic, many pension funds are invested in American-listed companies. Thus, potential reductions in their dividend amounts may have long-term impacts on Americans’ retirement incomes. The U.S. retirement system based on capital accumulation is indeed different from the French system.
Choosing quarterly dividend payments helps to “fluidify” the system of American pension funds. In addition, individual investors also appreciate receiving quarterly coupons with the aim of generating an income stream through stock investments.
