Voters Frustrated with Trump Want Change in Washington, DC, Poll Finds

15 October 2026

A large majority of American voters believes that U.S. President Donald Trump is falling short of expectations both domestically and on the international stage and wants significant changes in the upcoming midterm elections, according to a new AP-NORC poll that raises important warning signals for the Republican Party at a crucial moment.

The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that registered voters who identify as Democrats are more enthusiastic about voting than Republicans. More voters want Democrats to take control of Congress and have a more negative view of Republicans.

The Democratic edge is small on some measures, but taken together the results sketch a challenging scenario for Republicans, who remain in control of Congress under the burden of an unpopular war with Iran and rising prices at home.

About eight in ten voters overall say that the economy or the cost of living are among their main issues for the election, while roughly two-thirds say the same about health and the war with Iran. Other issues on which Trump tends to have more strength — such as immigration or crime — appear as lower priorities.

“The world is moving backward. We can barely afford things,” said Diana Walker, a 65-year-old Democrat from Decatur, Georgia. “Everyone is down. I don’t care if you are a Democrat or a Republican, we are all suffering.” Source: Associated Press.
