The Bologna police used a water cannon to try to disperse the crowd and made seven arrests after the protest turned violent, Ansa news agency reported.

In Milan, riot police in anti-riot gear also attempted to remove hooded demonstrators from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the luxurious shopping center located beside the cathedral square, as groups pulled away from the protest over the cost of living.

Shops closed their shutters and tourists fled from the central area. The Duomo (Cathedral) metro station was closed during the clashes, in which several people were injured and arrests occurred, according to Italian media reports.
The clashes echoed the violence in neighboring France, where tens of thousands of people, outraged by rising costs and the decline of public services, took to the streets this Saturday, in the country’s most violent protests in years.
