Trump Says He Will Speak With Lula, PT Member Asked Him Not to Interfere in the Race

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, plans to speak with the reelected Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) after the result of the election held on Sunday (25). The statement occurred on Thursday (29), after the American offered new criticisms of the Brazilian electoral process.

“I watched the election unfold. I was asked not to take sides for President Lula. I did not take sides. But when I saw what happened in Brazil, it was a disaster. I will speak with him, but I think the election was a disgrace in Brazil,” Trump told reporters before boarding for a rally in South Carolina.

Asked by reporters about who he considers the true winner of the elections in Brazil, Trump avoided answering directly. “I don’t want to comment, but I thought the election was a great embarrassment,” he reiterated.

On Wednesday night (28), Trump had already said that he would not get involved in the Brazilian election. The statement came a few minutes after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), defeated at the polls, had self-proclaimed “leader of Brazil” while remaining on American soil, after fleeing Brazil via Argentina.

Earlier, Trump had stated, without presenting evidence, that the Brazilian vote “appears to be a fraudulent election,” but noted that he maintained a good relationship with Lula.

In the letter released on Wednesday, Flávio initially declared himself “president-elect” and again questioned, without presenting evidence, the Brazilian electoral process. A few minutes later, the senator updated the document, replacing the self-declaration of “president-elect” with the expression “leader of Brazil.”

In the text, Flávio also thanked the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, and Trump for the assistance during his exit from Brazil, in addition to thanking the American people for the “welcome.”
