Ukrainian military drones have invaded the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, raising concerns that the war in Ukraine is spreading to NATO countries.
RIGA — The Latvian Armed Forces reported a brief incursion into the country’s airspace near the borders with Belarus and Russia on Sunday, asking people in the region to stay at home for safety during the incident.
“We inform you that there is a threat in the airspace… If you spot a low-flying or suspicious object, do not approach,” the military said in a post on X.
About 30 minutes later, they reported that the unidentified object had left Latvia’s airspace and that the threat had ended.
Ukrainian military drones have invaded the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, raising concerns that the war in Ukraine is spreading to NATO countries bordering Russia and its ally Belarus.
As Ukraine attacks Russian oil transport ports in the Baltic Sea, some of its drones have missed targets and triggered security alerts in neighboring countries. In Latvia’s case, this led to the government’s downfall earlier this year.
Moscow accused Kyiv of using NATO airspace as cover for attacks, while Kyiv says that some of its drones were diverted from their route by Russian signal interference. NATO countries typically blame Russia for the incidents, for having sparked the war by invading its neighbor nearly five years ago.
