Democrat Says Senate Won’t Vote to Withdraw the U.S. from NATO

2 April 2026

The leader of the Democratic caucus in the United States Senate, Chuck Schumer, stated on Wednesday, the 1st, that the Senate will not bring up for a vote a potential withdrawal of the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), amid statements by President Donald Trump suggesting that he may withdraw the country from the military alliance.

“I can promise this: the Senate will not vote to leave NATO and abandon our allies just because Trump is upset that they did not join his reckless war by choice,” Schumer wrote in a post on X.

The declaration comes after Trump hardened his tone against allied countries, demanding greater support in the Iran conflict and in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. In recent interviews and posts, the president has again questioned the willingness of European partners to share costs and risks.

Schumer also stressed that there is an institutional brake to prevent a president from unilaterally withdrawing the United States from NATO. According to him, a law passed in 2023, sponsored by then-Senator and now Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, provides that any withdrawal decision can advance only with the support of two-thirds of the Senate.

NATO is also being defended in a bipartisan manner by Senators Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, and Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware. In a joint statement, the two said that “NATO is the most successful military alliance in history” and stressed that its members “fought and died,” alongside American forces, in Afghanistan and Iraq.
