Eric Dane Health Update: Grey’s Anatomy Star Months After Announcing His Diagnosis

20 February 2026

Actor Eric Dane, known for his roles in the series “Grey’s Anatomy” and in “Euphoria,” died on Thursday (the 19th), at the age of 53, months after announcing a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and presenting visible complications of the degenerative neurological disease, which still has no cure. The information was confirmed by Dane’s spokesman.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed away on Thursday afternoon after a courageous battle against ALS. Dane spent his final days surrounded by cherished friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” the statement said.

What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a degenerative neurological disease that affects the nervous system. The condition has no cure and leads the patient to experience a gradual paralysis of motor functions, such as speaking, moving, swallowing, and breathing.

In 2018, Stephen Hawking, one of the most important physicists and mathematicians in history, died after facing the disease for more than 50 years.

According to the Ministry of Health, the causes for this type of ALS, as they are called the group of diseases that promote an increase of connective tissue and subsequent hardening of the organ, are not yet fully known. However, 10% of cases are associated with genetic mutation.

Other possibilities associated with the onset of ALS include a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is toxic to nerve cells, autoimmune diseases and protein misfolding.

Since the confirmation of his ALS diagnosis, Eric Dane has worked to advocate for those who share the same health condition. The disease affects motor neurons—cells responsible for controlling voluntary movements of the body, such as walking, speaking, chewing, breathing, or writing.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be greatly missed and will always be remembered with fondness. Eric loved his fans and was eternally grateful for the love and support he received. The family asked for privacy while navigating this impossible time.”

Symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

The symptoms of this condition typically appear after age 50; however, in some cases they can also be observed in people in other age groups. They are:

  • Gradual loss of strength and muscle coordination;
  • Inability to perform routine tasks, such as climbing stairs, walking, and rising;
  • Difficulties breathing and swallowing;
  • Choking easily;
  • Drooling;
  • Stuttering (dysarthria);
  • Head drooping;
  • Muscle cramps;
  • Muscle twitches;
  • Speech problems, such as a slow or abnormal pattern of speech (slurring or dragging words);
  • Voice changes, hoarseness;
  • Weight loss.

Does amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have a cure?

There is no cure for ALS. Only about 25% of patients survive more than five years after diagnosis with treatment and physical therapy, rehabilitation, use of orthotics, often also requiring a wheelchair.

What is the treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)?

In Brazil, through the Unified Health System (SUS), a medication called riluzole is offered, which slows the progression of the disease and prolongs the patient’s life. In addition, specialized rehabilitation treatments can be found in SUS Specialized Rehabilitation Centers.
