International authorities have spoken out after the United States captured the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and the first lady, Cilia Flores.
The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, celebrated the bombing. “Freedom advances. Long live freedom,” he said on X (Twitter).
In Europe, the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said that he is “following the situation in Venezuela in coordination with the Minister of State and of Foreign Affairs.”
Spain has called for “respect for international law” and for de-escalation of the conflict. Germany and Italy, for their part, confirmed that teams are monitoring the situation of European citizens living in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital.
The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, head of the bloc’s foreign policy, said she spoke with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the attacks. She said on X that Maduro “lacks legitimacy” and called for “moderation.” In a post, she stated that Maduro “lacks legitimacy” and called for “moderation.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the United States’ attack. “In the current situation, it is crucial, above all, to avoid an even greater escalation and to concentrate efforts on finding a way out of the situation through dialogue,” the statement says, which also labeled the American intervention as an “armed act of aggression.”
The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said via his X account that the Colombian government is observing with “deep concern” the reports of explosions and unusual aerial activity in Venezuela. Earlier, he had posted that Caracas was being bombarded and that the Organization of American States (OAS) and the UN should “meet immediately.”
Also on X, Cuba’s President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, denounced the attack and urged an “urgent” reaction from the international community. “Cuba denounces and demands an urgent reaction from the international community against the criminal attack by the United States on Venezuela. Our Zone of Peace is being brutally attacked. State terrorism against the brave Venezuelan people and against our America,” he stated on X.
The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, also spoke on social media, repudiating the American bombing of Venezuela, stating that the attack “is a brutal imperial aggression that violates” the Venezuelan sovereignty. (with Estadão Conteúdo)
