Iran and the U.S. in Direct Contact in Recent Days, Axios Says

16 March 2026

A direct line of communication between the United States envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has been reactivated in recent days, Axios reported on Monday, citing an American official and a knowledgeable source.

According to the publication, it is not clear how substantive the messages exchanged between Araghchi and Witkoff were, but this is the first known direct communication between the parties since the war began, more than two weeks ago.

The U.S. official and the knowledgeable source said that Araghchi sent text messages to Witkoff focusing on ending the war.

Drop Site News reported on Monday that Witkoff had sent messages to Araghchi and cited Iranian officials who asserted that the Iranian Foreign Minister was ignoring the messages from the White House envoy.

Neither of the sources spoke in detail about how many messages were exchanged or about their content.
