Musk Spent US$366 Million to Help Republicans Maintain Control of the U.S. Congress

13 October 2026

Elon Musk has spent around US$366 million in the 2026 midterm elections, with US$276 million just since July, trying to help the Republicans maintain control of Congress, even as Democrats’ chances of retaking the House and the United States Senate improve.

The generosity of Musk, previously reported by the New York Times, makes the world’s richest person probably the largest individual political donor in this year’s elections, according to campaign finance records.

There is a lot at stake for Musk, with the Democrats in the House asking for investigations into his government contracts as chief executive of the aerospace company SpaceX, as well as his work leading the Department of Government Efficiency during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Below is a breakdown of his political spending, confirmed by a spokesman for his super PAC, America PAC.

Musk has already spent US$366 million in this election cycle, which began on January 1, 2025.

Of that total, Musk donated at least US$276 million to Republican-aligned groups and his own super PAC since July.

Of the US$276 million in third-quarter donations: US$158 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC created to help elect Republicans to the Senate, aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota; US$20 million went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC created for Republicans in the House, aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana; US$76 million went to Musk’s America PAC; US$10 million went to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs the candidacy of Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate in Texas, where recent polls show him in a dead heat with Democrat James Talarico; US$10 million went to the Republican Governors Association; US$2 million went to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

The America PAC is helping Republican candidates in seven swing states and in nearly three dozen races for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The new donations will be publicly disclosed when many super PACs are required to disclose their third-quarter spending on Thursday.

Musk also donated more money through groups that do not disclose their donors, according to a New York Times report and confirmed by a spokesman for America PAC.

Musk spent approximately US$290 million during the last election cycle.
