Netanyahu Says He Will Establish a Security Zone in Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

17 April 2026

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Thursday the 16th that the Israeli Army will continue in Lebanon even after the announcement by American President Donald Trump of a ceasefire that would also include Hezbollah. According to Netanyahu, the country’s forces will establish a ten-kilometer security zone around the neighboring country.

“We will not leave,” Netanyahu said in a video message released by his office. “This security zone will allow us to prevent the invasion of our communities and deter anti-tank attacks against them,” he added.

The Israeli leader said the country has the chance to sign a historic peace agreement with Lebanon, but reiterated Israel’s demand for Hezbollah’s disarmament. According to Netanyahu, Trump also would have agreed to maintain the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
