The winners of this year’s prizes in the categories of Physics, Chemistry, Peace, Literature, Economics, and Medicine or Physiology will be announced between October 5 and 12.
The Nobel Foundation of Sweden announced on Friday that it will raise the prize amount for this year’s prestigious annual prizes by 9%, reaching a total of 12 million Swedish kronor (US$1.22 million) in each of the six categories.
“By increasing the prize value, we preserve the long-term importance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that the financial portion of the prize maintains its value over time,” said Hanna Stjarne, the executive director of the Nobel Foundation, in a statement.
The winners this year in the categories of Physics, Chemistry, Peace, Literature, Economics, and Medicine or Physiology will be announced between October 5 and 12, marking the 125th anniversary of the first award ceremony.
Created by the will of the 19th-century Swedish entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, the first prizes, in 1901, were 150,782 kronor per category, according to the foundation.
