North Korea Fires Two Missiles into the East Sea

21 September 2026

North Korea fired yet another projectile off its eastern coast on Sunday, the 20th, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

“North Korea launched another unidentified projectile into the East Sea,” Yonhap quoted South Korea’s armed forces. It is the second such launch in a short period.

The armed forces said they had intensified vigilance in anticipation of new launches and that South Korea is “sharing information closely” about the missile with the United States and Japan.

The launch comes eight days after North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, which it later described as a live-fire drill.

The firing occurred after North Korea rejected a United Nations nuclear watchdog agency resolution that demanded an end to its nuclear activities.

The Japanese prime minister’s office confirmed the launch of a “suspected ballistic missile.” Later, Japan’s Ministry of Defense stated that the projectile “had already hit the ground,” without further details.

North Korea accused “hostile forces” of attempting to end its nuclear program during this week’s General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
