North Korea Says It Is Not Bound by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

7 May 2026

North Korea is not bound by any nuclear non-proliferation treaty, the state media KCNA reported on Thursday (local time).

Kim Song, North Korea’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said in a statement that the United States and some countries are “tainting the atmosphere” at the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) held at UN headquarters, bringing to light the issue of North Korea’s nuclear weapons, KCNA said.

North Korea’s position as a state with nuclear weapons “does not change according to the rhetorical statements or the unilateral wishes of outside parties,” Kim said.
