Prince Harry has stated in an interview with GQ magazine that he hopes to reconcile with his father, King Charles III, and the rest of the British royal family, with whom he clashed after moving to the United States.
“With everything that is happening in the world, the most important thing is reconciliation. There are rifts between siblings, there are broken relationships between children and parents, children and one of the parents… Some people don’t want this to work out. I want it to work out. For me, there is already enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives to keep us dealing with family problems. It’s not worth it,” he stated.
The public statement comes amid a prolonged institutional and personal distancing that has marked the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the other members of the royal family over the past six years.
The relationship between the Duke of Sussex and Buckingham Palace has been punctuated by turbulence and public statements from both sides. The publication of Harry’s biography and the release of audiovisual productions detailing the backstage life of the monarchy have deepened the gap between the prince, his father, King Charles III, and his brother, Prince William.
Following the interview, a spokesperson for Harry said that the statement “had absolutely no intention of being a criticism of his brother or of any other member of the family. The remark was made in a general context and was in no way directed at his family.”
