Reuters/Ipsos: Trump Has His Lowest Career Approval Rating; 66% Disapprove

22 September 2026

The approval rating of the United States president, Donald Trump, fell to a historic low in his entire political career: only 32% of Americans approve of his second term, which began in January 2025, according to an Ipsos/Reuters poll. Disapproval reached 66%.

The drop was driven by a decline among voters in the Republican Party, led by Trump. In the previous poll, the president had 82% approval among Republicans; now that figure has fallen to 73%.

In the institute’s previous survey, Trump’s overall approval stood at 35%, three points above the result released this Monday, the 21st. In the first poll of the second term, shortly after Trump took office for the second time, approval was 47%.

Only 17% of respondents in the new survey approved the way he has handled the cost of living – the main issue that, according to Americans, will determine their vote in the November 3 midterm elections, when Trump’s Republican party will try to defend slim majorities in the Senate and in the House of Representatives.

Dissatisfaction among Republicans with regard to the issue has grown since Trump launched the war against Iran on February 28, which caused a sharp rise in gasoline and diesel prices in the United States. Now, for the first time, Republicans who disapprove of the way Trump handles the cost of living outnumber those who approve – 51% to 44%.

Trump’s approval has also worsened on issues such as the economy, foreign policy and immigration policy. The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online and gathered 1,277 responses from U.S. adults nationwide. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
