KYIV, Oct 1 (Reuters) – A Russian drone struck a school in the Ukrainian capital, authorities said on Thursday, the latest episode in a series of increasingly intense airstrikes against Kyiv.
The mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said there were children in the shelter at the time of the attack, which caused a fire. He said there were no injuries.
The State Emergency Service released images of rescue teams combing through the rubble and extinguishing the fire in the charred building, whose windows were shattered.
The morning attack occurred amid increasingly intense, around-the-clock strikes against Kyiv and other cities carried out with jet-powered drones, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces have had difficulty shooting down.
One person was injured Thursday morning in a Russian airstrike on a shopping mall in the port city of Odesa on the Black Sea, regional authorities said.
The head of the municipal administration, Serhiy Lysak, said the infrastructure was damaged but provided no further details.
Odesa and the surrounding region have been frequent targets of attacks aimed, in part, at choking Kyiv’s export revenues.
Russia, which says it attacks only military targets, said it had attacked a data center in Odesa and a cargo ship in the neighboring port of Chornomorsk.
