Switzerland closes airspace to U.S. flights over Iran conflict

(Bloomberg) — Switzerland closed its airspace to United States military flights directly linked to the war with Iran, citing its tradition of neutrality in armed conflicts.

Two requests for American reconnaissance planes to overfly Swiss territory on Sunday were rejected, the federal government in Bern said in a statement released on Saturday. Another three flights, including two transport aircraft, were authorized.

According to the government, new U.S. overflight requests that exceed the levels normally registered will be denied, unless the objective is clear and not related to the conflict.

“The neutrality law prohibits overflights by parties involved in the conflict that have a military purpose,” the statement said.
