The Secret Agent Wins Spirit Awards; Adolpho Veloso Also Takes Home a Prize

The Brazilian film “The Secret Agent” won another prize on the night of this Sunday, the 15th. This time, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian film received the Best International Film trophy at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Adolpho Veloso, another Brazilian contender in the race, won the Best Cinematography category for his work on “Dreams of a Train.” The Spirit Awards are regarded as the premier awards in American independent cinema.

“The Secret Agent” bested “All That Remains of You” (Cherien Dabis), “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” (Rungano Nyoni), “A Poet” (Simón Mesa Soto) and “Sirát” (Oliver Laxe).

Veloso, meanwhile, finished ahead of Alex Ashe (Peter Hujar’s Day), Norm Li (Blue Sun Palace), David J. Thompson (Warfare) and Nicole Hirsch Whitaker (Dust Bunny).

Brazil at the 2026 Oscars

“The Secret Agent” is in contention for an Oscar on March 15. The feature is nominated in the categories of Best Picture, Best Actor (Wagner Moura), Best International Feature Film and Best Ensemble. Veloso is on the list of nominees for Best Cinematography.
