A truck plowed into a youth soccer match in Wichita, Kansas, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, and leaving 10 others hospitalized with traumatic injuries, police said Saturday.

Injuries ranged from minor to severe, but none appeared to be life-threatening, Wichita police captain Aaron Moses said at a news conference. The two fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene, he added.

Moses said a 34-year-old woman was driving the truck, which ended up stopping in a field on the western edge of the Stryker Sports Complex. She has cooperated with investigators, he said, but when asked if she had been taken into custody, he limited himself to saying that she was in custody.

“We know what happened, but we are now working hard to determine why this happened, and we have not reached that conclusion yet,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said.

Among the injured were two 5-year-olds, two 8-year-olds, one 9-year-old and five adults, police said. In addition to these 10 people, one adult was hospitalized for non-traumatic medical issues.

The driver had a son playing football at the complex, but not on the field where the incident occurred, Moses said. The pickup involved had two minors as passengers, he added.
