Trump Administration Bans DeepSeek Technology in Federal Civilian IT Systems

20 October 2026

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) determined that federal civilian agencies remove from their information technology systems the artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by the Chinese company DeepSeek.

The order also prohibits future acquisitions of DeepSeek’s products and services, according to a DHS statement. The statement did not detail the security concerns that motivated the decision, nor did it establish a deadline for agencies to remove the technology in question.

The restrictions, under the 2018 Federal Acquisition Security Act, cover products developed by affiliates of DeepSeek, as well as third-party products and services created based on DeepSeek implementations.

The move comes amid a backdrop of growing competition between the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence, with Chinese developers seeking to narrow the advantage of their American counterparts.
