The government of President Donald Trump has revoked more than 300,000 U.S. visas during his second term, the State Department said on Tuesday, as the federal government continues its broad crackdown on immigration.
The figure revealed an acceleration in the pace of visa revocations in recent weeks.
In an update released on August 10, the State Department had estimated the number of visa revocations since the start of Trump’s current term, in January 2025, at more than 175,000.
Trump says that his crackdown on immigration and the deportation campaign are aimed at improving internal security. Human rights advocates say the crackdown violated due process and the rights to freedom of expression, as well as having created an unsafe environment, especially for ethnic minorities, who have expressed concerns about racial profiling.
When announcing the latest figure on X, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the Trump administration “revoked more visas at a faster pace than any other government in history.”
Pigott stated that the government has “zero tolerance for foreigners who are here on a visa and who violate the law, commit fraud, or undermine our national security.”
Among the visa revocations particularly condemned by human rights advocates are those of foreign pro-Palestinian protesters who demonstrated against Israel’s attacks — the United States’ ally — on Gaza and those of foreigners because of social media comments about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
In addition to efforts to deport foreign protesters, the Trump administration intensified oversight of immigrants’ and visa applicants’ social media.
Human rights advocates say the government has invoked national security grounds to pursue critics and has used isolated fraud cases to broadly target immigrant communities, such as the Somali-American community in Minnesota.
Although Trump campaigned in 2024 on a promise to curb illegal immigration, his administration also made legal immigration more difficult — for example, by imposing onerous fees for certain work visas.
