The White House announced the creation of an organ named the “Peace Council” to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the territory’s transitional administration, after the ceasefire signed at the end of last year. The body will be chaired by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
According to a statement released this Friday (16), the council will include the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Under the plan presented, the “Peace Council” will be responsible for overseeing reconstruction works, administrative reorganization and political arrangements in Gaza, in coordination with Israel, Arab nations and the international community.
“The United States remains fully committed to supporting this transition framework, working in close partnership with Israel, key Arab nations and the international community,” states the White House note.
The statement also provides for the creation of a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, which will be led by Ali Sha’ath, former head of the Palestinian Authority and born in Gaza.
Trump also named Aryeh Lightstone and Josh Gruenbaum as senior advisers to the council, tasked with handling the “strategy and day-to-day operations” related to the plan for the territory.
