Trump Cites ‘Final Stages’ of Iran Negotiations, U.S. Press Says

20 May 2026

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he is in the “final stages” of negotiations with Iran, in comments to reporters made on his way to an event at the Coast Guard Association.

According to the White House press pool, Trump also reiterated threats to Tehran should an agreement not be reached.

“We’ll see what happens. Either we secure an agreement, or we will do some rather unpleasant things, I hope it doesn’t come to that,” he said.

Earlier, the American president had already given statements to reporters at the White House, commenting on the Republican Party primaries, relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and briefly on the situation in the Middle East.

On that occasion, he praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but said the premier would do “anything” that Trump “wants him to do.”

Regarding Iran, Trump had said this morning that he is not in a hurry to close a deal and even cited past United States wars that lasted years.

“We were in Vietnam for 19 years, in Afghanistan and in other places for 10 years,” he said.
