Trump: Good chance of a nuclear deal with Iran after delaying an attack

19 May 2026

The American president, Donald Trump, said on Monday that there was a ‘very good chance’ that the United States would reach a deal with Iran to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, hours after saying he had delayed a planned military strike to allow negotiations to continue.

Trump said that the leaders of the United States’ major Middle East allies asked him to delay a planned military strike against Iran, scheduled for Tuesday, to allow negotiations with the Iranian government to continue, while warning that the United States remained prepared to launch a large-scale attack if no deal is reached.

‘There seems to be a very good chance that they will be able to reach an agreement. If we can do this without bombing them, I would be very happy,’ Trump told reporters gathered for the drug-price announcement on Monday.
