Trump Pledges to Fund Ads Praising Him After Criticism of His Use of Public Funds

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he would begin funding video advertisements with his own resources and with funds from his principal political action committee, the MAGA Inc. super PAC, which had previously been shown using taxpayers’ resources and had raised ethical questions.

“The radical left is bothered by the fact that I am airing ads, which I consider a positive promotion for our great United States, paid for with U.S. money,” Trump wrote on social media on Monday.

“This is something quite common to do, but instead, although nothing will satisfy them, I decided that patriotic ads, among others, will be paid for by me and with the resources I have raised for MAGA Inc.”, he added, referring to his main super PAC.

The White House had been defending the advertisements. One of the ads shows positive images of Trump, a montage of photos about the fight against communism, and a narration claiming that a golden era for the United States has begun. According to the government, the videos are public service advertisements intended to encourage Americans to love their country.

The administration also argued that Trump will not be on the ballot in the November midterm elections and that the ads do not encourage voters to vote for any particular candidate.

Democrats and a government watchdog group say the videos may violate laws prohibiting the use of public resources for “advertising or propaganda,” in addition to infringing ethical rules. In late September, the Public Citizen organization filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the independent watchdog, and the Office of Special Counsel.

Trump and the Republican Party risk losing control of Congress in next month’s elections. The president faces record levels of disapproval, amid widespread dissatisfaction with his economic agenda, especially due to the pressure of high prices on American families.
