Trump Says a Diplomatic Deal with Cuba Is Possible

19 May 2026

WASHINGTON, May 19 (Reuters) – The U.S. president, Donald Trump, said on Tuesday that he believes a diplomatic deal could be reached with the Cuban government and that he could help the country, regardless of whether there is a ‘regime change’ in the country.

‘I think so,’ Trump told reporters at the White House when asked whether he believed that a diplomatic deal with Cuba could be reached. ‘Cuba is reaching out to us. They need help. But Cuba is a failed nation. Cuba needs help, and we will do this.’

The government describes Cuba’s current communist government as corrupt and incompetent and is pressing for a regime change.
