Trump Says He Will Meet Colombia’s President After a Phone Call

8 January 2026

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said that steps are being taken for him to meet with the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, at the White House in Washington, after the two spoke on Wednesday.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that Petro called “to explain the drug situation and other misunderstandings that we had.”

This is the first telephone call between the two presidents since Trump said, on Sunday, that a U.S. military operation focused on the government of Colombia seemed ‘good’ for him.

The details of the conversation were not immediately clarified, but a source from Petro’s office said that the call was ‘cordial’ and ‘respectful’.
