Trump Says He’s Watching Brazil’s Elections, but Dodges Questions About Backing a Candidate

The New York Times wrote, in its Sunday opinion editorial on the 25th, that the United States has a “problematic history” of interference in foreign elections

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Sunday, the 25th, that he is monitoring the elections in Brazil, but again avoided answering whether he was backing any of the candidates.

“We are watching,” Trump stressed when asked by a reporter at the White House whether he was supporting anyone in the Brazilian race.

The American newspaper The New York Times wrote in its Sunday opinion editorial on the 25th that the United States has a “problematic history” of interference in foreign elections.

According to the publication, Washington has become more respectful of other democracies and largely avoided intervening in their campaigns, but President Donald Trump would be taking the United States back to its past “intrusive and counterproductive” behavior.

The newspaper cites the Brazilian elections and says Trump did not formally endorse Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), but promoted policies outside the standard of the American diplomatic tradition in his favor.
