Trump Says High US Interest Rates Weigh on Inflation

1 October 2026

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, again criticized the level of interest rates in the country and stated that elevated rates are harming the economy more than inflation. The statement was given in an interview with Time magazine published on Thursday, the 1st. According to him, “certain levels of inflation” can also help quickly reduce the burden of public debt.

Trump blamed the Federal Reserve (the Fed) for the high cost of credit and said that the U.S. should have “the lowest interest rate in the world.” The Republican again accused members of the central bank’s board of acting politically against his administration, but stated that he does not blame Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for the central bank’s recent decisions.

In the energy field, Trump said that the U.S. will “soon” begin to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. When addressing Venezuela, he stated that major oil companies are expanding their presence in the country and that Washington maintains a “very good” relationship with the government of Delcy Rodríguez.

For Time, Trump also commented on the AI race. He said he had liked “very much” the CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, after dining with the executive, and stated that his positions on AI safety would be different from how they are portrayed in the press. The president added that he could consider deals that give the government a stake in companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, in the manner of operations that, according to him, have already been carried out with other companies.
