Trump Signals Support for JD Vance as Possible 2028 Republican Candidate

12 May 2026

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, on Monday signaled that he views Vice President JD Vance as a possible Republican candidate for the White House in 2028.

During a dinner with allies and guests in the Rose Garden at the White House, Trump publicly addressed the succession by commenting on who could lead the Republican Party after the end of his term.

“Will it be JD? Will it be someone else? I don’t know,” he said in a relaxed tone.

Next, the president asked for a reaction from the audience to possible names for the next race. First, he asked who supported Vance; then he did the same regarding Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

After the guests’ responses, Trump concluded: “Looks like a good ticket.”
