Trump to sanction a large unidentified bank on Monday

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said on Thursday that the Trump administration would impose sanctions on a large bank next week, as it continues to press Tehran to end a conflict of more than six months between the United States and Iran.

He did not name the financial institution nor the country during his appearance on the Real America’s Voice program, but said the measure would be taken on Monday.

Bessent explained that the measure was originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks — the deadliest attack on U.S. soil.

“We will simply continue with this process until everyone stops doing business with this regime,” he said.

“We will make this so unprofitable that, if you want to risk a catastrophic event for your company, for yourself or for your personal finances, feel free. But we will go after you.”

The United States has imposed a series of economic measures against Iran since the start of the conflict, in February, targeting oil exports, maritime transport networks, arms procurement channels, financial intermediaries, digital asset platforms and aviation links.

The Trump administration intensified its campaign last month by imposing sanctions on nearly 60 entities, individuals and vessels and expanding the scope of secondary sanctions against those who do business with Iran in sectors such as maritime transport, aviation, technology, gold and digital assets.

Despite the mounting pressure on Iran, the U.S. President Donald Trump predicted on Wednesday that the war would not end before the midterm elections in the United States, in November.
