US and China Extend Trade Truce Through January 10, Treasury Secretary Says

24 September 2026

The United States Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said that he and his Chinese counterpart agreed to extend by two months the so-called Busan Agreement.

“I don’t know if it will be possible to close a broader deal. I don’t know if we will simply renew the current agreement,” Bessent said in an interview with Fox News.

Bessent met earlier with China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng to continue discussions related to artificial intelligence and trade.

He Lifeng has led China’s economic negotiations with the United States since last year and met Bessent over the weekend, in New York. After that meeting, Bessent stated that the two sides had agreed to broaden the dialogue on artificial intelligence, including the possible creation of a notification mechanism for shared threats.

The Chinese government, however, has not yet confirmed this understanding.
