US Resumes Consular Services in Brazil After Suspension Over Security Concerns

5 October 2026

Consular services at the United States Embassy and the U.S. consulates in Brazil were resumed on Monday, October 5, after having been suspended on Friday, October 2, due to “security concerns.”

According to a spokesperson for the United States Department of State, “the Trump administration has the highest priority on the security and protection of American citizens. The United States Embassy and Consulates in Brazil resumed their normal operations on Monday, October 5, including consular services.”

On Friday, the alert was issued by the U.S. State Department, on the eve of the Brazilian elections. In addition to the United States, the Australian Embassy in Brasília also said it would be closed for the day for similar reasons.

Australia made the announcement through its ambassador to Brazil, Sophie Davies. The diplomatic offices did not detail the reasons for the measure nor whether the closure was related to the elections.

The Federal Police said that on Friday they carried out two search and seizure warrants in São Paulo and in the vicinity of the Federal District to “investigate alleged planning of acts that could put U.S. diplomatic facilities at risk.”
